How Rock Garden is laid out
Rock Garden is arranged as a fantasy of a lost kingdom, divided into 14 chambers, including a forecourt. The route moves through three phases, each with a distinct look and theme, so you can follow the garden’s progression as you walk.
Chandigarh Tourism describes the garden as covering 35 acres, while the district administration gives an area of 40 acres. The linked chambers make it worth allowing time to move through the different sections rather than treating it as a single sculpture courtyard.

Sculptures, courtyards and the site's story
Rock Garden’s figures are made from discarded materials, and its three phases range from human and animal forms to village scenes and Roman-inspired architecture. Founder Nek Chand began creating the garden secretly in his spare time in 1957. It was not part of Le Corbusier’s original Master Plan for Chandigarh.
In Phase 1, toilet fixtures, broken glass and broken tiles become human and animal figures. Phase 2 evokes an Indian village with huts, temples and pathways. Phase 3 draws on Roman architecture and includes swings.
Beyond the sculpture routes, the garden has a waterfall, aquariums, an open-air theatre and a laughing-mirror display. Camel and train rides, a Dolls Museum, a souvenir shop and a food court are also among its attractions.
